Why use traditional slate?
As one of the world’s oldest roofing materials, natural slate sits on top of many of Scotland’s historic and domestic housing stock. Slate is one of Scotland’s most significant building materials and with its amazing durability and strength, natural slate has been shown to outlast the very building that it sits on.
Many of Scotland’s slated roofs have simply weathered or have become victim to nail or timber rot, but in most cases, careful removal of the slates means that these can be reused. However, in recent years, there has been a shift in the Scottish market towards lesser quality Spanish slate, which is typically much easier to install. As Spanish slate is very soft and easy to cut, it has fast become an accepted alternative for builders to use for their projects. However, this lesser quality slate is not as durable or attractive as traditional slate.
The rapid growth of Spanish slate has led to the demise of the traditional Scottish slate, and for many Scottish housebuilders and roofing companies, sourcing reclaimed slates for traditional properties within the region has become a real challenge.
Fortunately, we have a few carefully selected reclaimed suppliers and we can offer a matching service for conservation areas and heritage work. Understanding the design of the roof and the materials originally used goes a long way to understanding how best to address slating requirements. Traditionally Scottish slated roofs consist of timber sarking board, building paper and slate fixed with steal clout nails. Our extensive knowledge of traditional slated roofs means we can deliver high quality workmanship made to last with use of old and new building materials.
We carry out all aspects of slating work from simple repairs to full roof re-slates. We also offer long term guarantees on all of our work and we will always use the correct materials through our extensive knowledge and experience.
